Where did our great nation go wrong? If George Washington was here today, what would he say about our political system, about our legal system, and about our system of business?
Let us travel back in time to the American revolution. Washington led the American army. He did not have enough infantry or tools to fight, yet he didn’t give up. He prayed to God to help. And then he crossed the Delaware River and began a surprise attack and won! And 7 years later, at the Treaty of Paris in 1783, America won its freedom.
Similarly, let us remember too, a remarkable one of this time, Betsy Ross. She was chosen to sew the American flag. The flag is a symbol to soldiers everywhere that their suffering is not in vane. It is the sacrifice that men and women have to keep America free.
With this in mind, I believe liberals are choking the very freedom our founding fathers envisioned. America was great because we had freedom to think, and start a venture. And lawyers were the gatekeepers of this freedom. As it is, many law students go to law school thinking they will have a cushy office in a big high rise, and win lots of cases because they are so brilliant. Many law students don’t think of themselves as sales people. As a result, we have people like Jim Bliwas saying that lawyers should give up sales and marketing to people who can do sales and marketing. But if you do that, then we wouldn’t need paralegals. For lawyers are supposed to give paralegals the very jobs they love to do so they can go out and be rainmaker.
The business of law has forgotten how to provide service. Thinking like a lawyer is a sham. Lawyers want to make money while neglecting the service aspect of their job. Thinking like a lawyer just means thinking like a salesperson.
So what the hell doe the LSAT have to do with the practice of law? Nothing… nothing… really, nothing. What is sad is that ONLY 10% of lawyers know how to rainmake.
When the whole legal profession recognizes that practicing law is one skill set and bringing in new business a totally different activity, the result will give law students a clearer picture of what they are getting into and what law schools is all about. Then maybe those who are enamored with the former set of skills can obtain an undergraduate degree in law, and those that want mastery of the latter skills can obtain a masters degree in law.
