Everyone seems to agree: hosting a book party is an enriching, rewarding, and so much fun! So why do so many people push the pause button?
Like anything else, hosting a book party comes with a common list of assumptions and misconceptions. But these “reasons” not to host are not only misguided, they just might be holding you back from getting some really awesome books for your kids FREE!
Let us demystify the hosting experience by debunking some common myths! Do you find yourself saying, “We’d love to host a book party BUT….
1) “We can’t afford it!”
Hosting a home show can get expensive!! (Right?) But what if your consultant actually paid for all the food and drinks? (Whew!!)
As your consultant I come and bring some food and drinks to share along with a sample of books meaning all you have to do is invite your friends and make sure they come.
And let’s look at this another way…
When weighing the invaluable gains your family will receive from hosting a book party (I will give you a script so you personalize and invite your friends) what other parties have you done that could hope to compare while simultaneously the consultant does all the work and gives you free books as a reward?
2) “I don’t have any time, so I can’t host! When can I possibly fit this into my already hectic schedule?”
These days, just about everyone is strapped for time and extremely busy, but that doesn’t have to derail your plans to host a book party!
Option A: Host a home show! Many moms are able to squeeze 2 hours on a Saturday or Sunday and share some quality time with their friends, and what an amazing opportunity to share great books and talk education with your friends!
Option B: Host a 30 min facebook party! What if you could party in your pijamas while you mingle and catch up with your friends?
Bottom line: there’s no reason to let your busy life disrupt an amazing opportunity.
3) “What if there are problems, like my friends don’t show up? I am afraid of rejection…
Well, in our experience, insurmountable problems are absolutely the exception, not the rule.
This is kind of like saying, “I’d love to let my athletically gifted son play football, but I hear he could get injured!” Like with any party there is always a certain amount of risk, but there is also the opportunity for massive reward. You pick!
But seriously… what if you find yourself in an uncomfortable situation? What if there are issues with interest? What if there are friends who don’t want to come? That’s what I am here for! That’s why you have a book lady ready to chat any day of the week, and why you have my support to help you make your book party experience the best ever.
I take your partnership seriously, and I set a very high standard for myself … backed by a hostess training plan and a support team that won’t let problems go unresolved. I’ll help guide you through the minor bumps you may face along the way, and we have a tried-and-true system for navigating larger issues as well. As a last resort, you DO have the opportunity to say “this isn’t working for me right now, can we reschedule.” If working through roadblocks just isn’t cutting it, we can move the dates up and reschedule.
Bottom line: You’ll never be alone. I am here to help you have the very best experience.
4) “Our home is too small!” or “We live in an apartment!”
Many of my hostess live in small homes that’s why most of them opt for an online party instead.
When it comes to your home, size is not important. (Truly!) And if you’d like to host but don’t have the space, all we need is to get 10 people to attend for a really awesome party. Just be sure to set the table for 10.
5) “We don’t have any kids of our own!”
You may not have any children now but know people with children that need books.
How many moms do you know? Your sister, your brothers wife, your neighbor, your coworker… What you can do is give your mom friends your hostess reward, even just one book, to say “I think your kids would love these books.”
Just remember, not all hostesses are extroverted social butterflies! Some actually PREFER a nonchalant book party. (And I can help you with that!)
You’ll love the vibe that’s created with a book party.
6) “We don’t have the time or the patience to invite people over to our home or do an online book party”
Good news! All our hostesses lead very busy lives before, and many of them squeeze 30 minutes for a book party (or two hours). Want to know the even BETTER news? With apps like zoom or visly and facebook, you have partying at your fingertips. (Technology for the win!)
And, let’s look at this “problem” from another angle! When there IS no time, when you DO struggle to to fit the extras into your life (because most of us are in the same boat!) – what if you embraced it as a profound opportunity for growth? I will help you prioritize a fun and simple party for you. What a gift!
7) “We’ve got some home remodeling going on right now, so we’ll have to put it off for later!”
Ok. If you’ve gutted the kitchen and bath and are camping in the backyard, then yes, this could be an issue. But if you’re just updating the living room, swapping paint colors, fixing the roof, adding some landscaping, doing some drywall… no problem!
You might be gawking at the screen right now: “REALLY? You want me to host a party and invite people over while our house is torn up in remodel?”
The key thing to realize here is that hosting book party isn’t really the same as hosting a BOOK party where I invite people over – it’s more like hosting an online book party! So WHATEVER your family has planned, whether it’s remodeling or traveling or community service or just chilling on the couch… you can host a party from wherever you are and all it takes is 30 minutes, a Iphone or Ipad. It’s all part of the unique, online experience! (And BONUS, maybe they’ll learn a thing or two right along with you! Pictured here: some comfy clothes, a computer, and get yourself a snack or drink; a fun online activity!)
8) “Our kids are very young! Shouldn’t I wait to host until they’re older?”
This is perhaps the most common misconception kicked around by potential hostesses, and it’s tragic… because they are MISSING OUT!!
Do you take your younger children to the library, read aloud to them, or how often do you buy books at a local book store? If you’re excited about engaging your young kids in those enriching activities, just apply that same perspective to hosting a book party, and what will you get!
Hosting a book party when your own children are young comes with so many advantages. For starters, you’ll expose them to language and imagination and vocabulary at an early age, when they’re still soaking up life like a sponge. Their view of the world will become so much bigger as a result books.
And what’s more, hosting when your children are younger will naturally dodge some common issues with being prepared for kindergarten – things like having a rich vocabulary, and being able to follow instructions. There’s no wrong time to host a book party; and when your children are young is actually one of the BEST times to say yes to this formative experience.
You’re one of those really busy families? PERFECT!
9) “No really we are SO busy! I don’t even have time to even shower.”
Most of the time, this “busy” family lifestyle is exactly the kind of thing you need to help you THRIVE and decompress! A hostess who is BUSY is far more likely to organize, and plan the BEST party experience! Hostesses who are on-the-go tend to naturally build close friendships and have positive rapport.
The trick is to find the right day and time – a time that works just right for you! Find yourself constantly at the soccer field? Great, let’s find you a group of soccer moms! Marching band competitions every weekend? Awesome, let’s party during the week! It may sound a little “braggy,” but the truth is I’ll help you find the right time to schedule a party with you. A night that fits right into your version of “busy.” Whatever you have going on, it’s an opportunity for someone to discover our books.
Sound too perfect? Ok, you’re right, sometimes your schedules may not gel exactly as planned… but when there ARE scheduling conflicts, don’t worry!
Hosting an online book party only takes 30 minutes! And your friends will appreciate you for share Usborne Books & More with them.
10) “My kids don’t like to read”
Is there even such a thing as a “a kid that doesn’t read? Aren’t they all incredibly unique? I’ve placed thousands of books with thousands of families, and I can confidently tell you: your kids will fall in love with our books.
We tend to think that if kids don’t like reading what’s the point in giving them books and spending money to buy them a book, but that’s simply not true. Kids are just as diverse as the books we sell, and there is a book out there waiting and hoping to find a child just like yours to inspire and spark wonder. I have had amazing experiences sharing our books with kids and families.
Just think about it. If we found the right book for your child that he or she falls in love with… would you deny them the opportunity? If you’re interested in a sneak peak, visit my youtube channel StoryTamerTV!
