“Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.” Oscar Wilde
One of the reasons I decided to homeschool and join Usborne Books & More is that I don’t want my child take 30 years to learn to read proficiently. I want to nip reading in the butt. Learning to read in English is hard. English has a mi-rad of historical influence. So the English language needs special attention in order for your child to be able to understand what he is reading. So teaching your child the phonics rules is the first step to learning to read well and proficiently.
I was born and raised in the East Coast. South Miami, FL. My parents came to America in the 1960s fleeing Cuba’s socialist regime. They became refugee’s dreaming of the day they would return home to their paradise Island. But that dream never materialized and they had to create paradise in Miami. A home-away-from-home. Thus, it became Cuba in America. And I was raised speaking two languages. Society became a dual language society. It is the only dual language society in the USA. I am proud to be Cuban-American.
I’m all about promoting truth, freedom and teaching you how to support your child(ren)’s education and help them fall in love with the books they read so they can develop into lifelong learners. Let me show you how YOU can help your children lean into life. And then, lean in some more.
I believe that education is not something you can give but something a child does for him/herself.
I also believe our school system fails to develop our children’s minds and create lifelong learners. I know for sure that life is what you make it when you have a strong foundation. And I want to help YOU support your children’s reading at home so they can succeed in school and beyond.
Give children permission to be brilliant.
Give children a chance to be themselves.
I believe that what we need to teach our children – how to read – and be proficient readers. I believe that books have the power to teach you anything. You can learn how to live a life of purpose and serve others through your work, and receive a nice living wage through it, if you make your work meaningful to others. This is what we need to teach children. That they can live the life God has planned if we are serving others.
WHAT BRINGS ME HERE?
I wanted to be a great communicator and therefore dreamed of a life in law. It wasn’t until I took the LSAT exam that I realized I had a “gap” in my reading ability–I was was in the 64% of kids who were not proficient readers in 4th grade. I spent a whole year studying for this exam–this made me a better reader for I was now more active than passive. I did a graduate program at the law school for non-lawyers and then enrolled in the paralegal program and earned my certificate. It wasn’t until studying at the law school with lawyers, that I learned how to learn and take advantage of my education. The paralegal program and the non-lawyering program allowed me to learn more about law than had I gone to law school so much so that it allowed me to defend my own cases in court and win–as well as settle my own case out of court. I could’ve been a really good litigator. Being proficient at reading and helping your child learn to read will allow your child the opportunity to learn anything he wants to learn and be successful at whatever he or she chooses. Nevertheless, life took a different turn when my son was born, and decided to homeschool. That job took me on an adventure to promote literacy with Usborne Books & More and allow me to indulge my creativity and enhance the lives of children everywhere.
I don’t want YOUR kids to end up like me –improving their reading proficiency and developing their vocabulary late in life when they should be doing something worthwhile.
